Utility locating also known as underground utility mapping or utility detection is the ability to detect and locate underground pipes and cables prior to excavation. The most important and costly to repair pipes in any situation are electrical cables, gas pipes, telecommunication cables and water pipes. These pipes are also a safety concern if damaged during excavation.

The key to any excavation project is knowing exactly what is underground before you start digging. Failure to identify any underground assets can become very costly (in some cases even illegal). Dial-Before-You-Dig (DBYD) plans are a fundamental requirement for most worksites.
